When setting levels, ensure that you are not overdriving
the audio adapter, or you will get clipping distortion. Use the following
procedure as a quick way to check the recording level:
- From the Welcome window, click on Applications —>
Voice Segments.
- Click Options —> Format
Control, and ensure that the format selected is 8 kHz,
μ-law (U.S.A.) or A-law (Europe).
- Click Segment —> New.
- Record a sample of input data into the new voice segment.
- The ideal level for the input signal is 200-500 units on the vertical
axis of the waveform:
- If the signal is above 1000 units, clipping may result on peaks.
Reduce the level of the input signal.
- If the signal is below 200 units, you may not get the best quality
of compressed voice. Increase the level of the input signal, with
an external preamplifier if possible.
You can now begin recording.
