Introducing Brooktrout Fax

The transmission of facsimile (fax) documents across the public switched telephone network is well established as a popular means of business communication. The addition of fax support can significantly enhance the functions of existing Blueworx Voice Response applications. It can also allow several new application possibilities.

This section provides some background information about fax, how it is supported in Blueworx Voice Response, how to plan for fax applications, and how to configure the system to include them. A fax sample application is supplied with Blueworx Voice Response to show you how fax can be integrated with Blueworx Voice Response. This has to be installed and imported into Blueworx Voice Response, and it comes with its own documentation in a file contained in the import file. For more information see, The Fax Sample Application (FSA).

Blueworx Voice Response has fax functionality incorporated into the base product. Previously, the fax capability in Blueworx Voice Response was provided by the Brooktrout fax feature within the unified messaging application, IBM Unified Messaging.

The Brooktrout fax feature was first introduced in Unified Messaging Version 6.3 and Version 6.4. Unified Messaging is now provided without fax support and instead uses the fax support supplied with Blueworx Voice Response. The previous Unified Messaging fax functionality was designed for use with Unified Messaging only. The purpose of the fax feature in Blueworx Voice Response is to provide a basis upon which application programmers can build their own custom fax applications. Examples of such applications might include 'fax on demand', where there exists a database of files for each of a range of products, or for faxing messages which have been received in the form of e-mails.

If you have the version of Brooktrout fax supplied with Unified Messaging installed at any time, you must complete the following tasks, in order, before attempting to use Brooktrout fax with Unified Messaging or Blueworx Voice Response:
  1. Apply the latest PTF for Unified Messaging Version 6.4.
  2. Install Blueworx Voice Response Version 4.2 (if you have not already done so).
  3. Execute the migrate_btfax.sh script supplied with the latest PTF for Unified Messaging Version 6.4.

Brooktrout fax uses either the Brooktrout TR1034 digital fax card for PCI or the redundant Brooktrout TR114+P16S digital fax card for PCI.

The TR114+P16S provides 16 independent fax channels through an SCbus interface. A maximum of three TR114+P16S fax cards, providing up to 48 channels of fax, may be installed in any one machine.

The supported TR1034 series cards provide independent fax channels through an H100 interface. A maximum of one TR1034 fax card can be installed in any one machine. The supported TR1034 cards are as follows:

The Brooktrout TR1034 and TR114+P16S are not supported when both installed in the same machine.
